The method
How the pillars are found
The year turns at Lichun, when the Sun reaches 315° of longitude, not on 1 January. The month follows the solar terms, its stem by the five-tigers rule. The day is the unbroken sixty-day count (1 October 1949 was 甲子; 1 January 2000 was 戊午). The hour is the two-hour watch. Each stem and branch carries one element, and the eight are counted. Checked against the k366 almanac and the Hong Kong Observatory calendar for this day.
